The Valley of Bones

One notorious pass into the jewel-laden Southlands is through the Valley of Bones, a mysterious crevice that winds between two mighty peaks. Among the rocky terrain, a cave has been crudely hewn out of the wall, and a lone aging warrior makes his home here, feeding off of bats, cave rats, and other delicacies. Despite his age, the warrior, known as "Rocky" (pun intended), has amazing agility and hearing. He knows when intruders use his pass to access the lands beyond. He knows how to rattle their nerves and make them think otherwise. What Northerners do not know -- is why?

The true mystery behind this ancient warrior remains unknown. Few warriors have passed through the Valley of Bones without incident. Most are confronted by the raving old man and forced to cough up some treasure. The majority are pelted by sharp jagged stones, while the old barbarian cackles from a safe hiding place. Those who press on despite the onslaught tend to get confused and disoriented and return to the northern entrance of the valley. What is the old man hiding? And why does he prevent some from passing through in peace?

Legends say that the old man is actually a spokesman for some ancient Northerner god, and the pass is sacred grounds. Others believe the Valley is a prophetic tool -- warriors who are allowed to pass will go on to great fame. Others think that it is an old wise warrior who weeds out the weaklings from the strong.

During each raiding season, a dozen or more barbarians who journey into the valley go missing, and their bones are found neatly wrapped up in fur cloaks at the northern entrance to the pass. Is the old man truly a demon? Perhaps an enterprising, courageous, veteran barbarian might confront him and gain some answers.
